Affordable high-end production. It’s what we do.

No matter the size of your project, we can assemble the people and the tools appropriate for your budget. From concept to completion, Broadcast or Internet.

What do the terms: Smoke 2011, 1080p, 4K, HD-SDI, DVCPro HD, Blu-Ray, Fiber Channel or RED Digital Cinema mean to you?

Probably nothing.

And that’s just fine. Sure, these are critical tools in broadcasting, but if you’re looking for an affordable yet high-end studio, your highest concern should be that your production team understands your project as well as it understands state-of-the-art equipment.

Yes, Atomic Productions has all of the high-end broadcasting tools mentioned above. And more. And we know how to use them. Well. But we don’t expect to impress you simply by listing systems and equipment. We do, however, expect to impress you with what we can create at very affordable rates.

Atomic Productions has been at the forefront of broadcast technology since the digital transition in the early 1990’s. We pride ourselves on using the latest equipment efficiently and effectively to meet your goals… and your budget.

Affordable high-end production. It’s what we do.

We invite you to view our inventory of equipment. It includes one of the most high-end finishing systems in the industry: Autodesk Smoke. And one of the most revolutionary new digital film cameras ever produced: RED.

Then check-out our portfolio of commercials and programming to see what we can do with all of that fancy equipment.

But most importantly, get in touch with us. Talk with us. Share your vision with us, and let us show you how we can be part of your team.

No matter the size of your project, we can assemble the people and the tools appropriate for your budget. From concept to completion, Broadcast or Internet.

Affordable high-end production. It’s what we do.

What We Do

With seven edit suites, a sound stage, lighting, grip and remote equipment, Atomic can truly provide the full gamut of production equipment for any project.

You have probably heard the term “full service production company.”  What does that really mean?  “Soup to nuts,” “Concept to completion,” any description is fine.  But Atomic is a little different than most.  With seven edit suites, a sound stage, lighting, grip and remote equipment, not to mention a wide range of cameras and support gear, including a SteadiCam, sliders & dollies, a teleprompter, Atomic can truly provide the full gamut of production equipment for any project. And it’s all in-house.

Our philosophy is simple.  We do everything it takes to get the job done.  And we’ve been getting jobs done for nearly 20 years.

But it’s not just a bunch of equipment that sets us apart.   It’s the people.  Not just experienced producers and directors – we have a few of those on staff – or even award winning editors and motion graphic artists.  They’re here, too.  Plus, people who specialize in scriptwriting and creative, or others that focus on engineering and technology.  We have an in-house RED camera tech, a colorist, a make-up artist, others who handle commercial traffic, duplication, even Blu-Ray authoring and 3D animation.  Those people are all here every day.  It’s the experience that Atomic has in all facets of production that makes us different.  Anyone can buy a bunch of equipment, but how many companies can bring that combination of people and expertise to a project without leaving the office?

WHAT YOU DO HERE:

Titles are overrated. Everyone does a little bit of everything at Atomic so it’s hard to say. I’m one of our in-house Producers, one of our Directors, the bookkeeper, janitor, and the CEO all wrapped into one. Depends what day it is.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED AT ATOMIC:

Got the business license in 1990. The company was first called Maverick Video Productions, then to focus on the graphics we were doing at the time changed the name to CGI Production Group. In 1997 we changed the name to Atomic Productions. Before Atomic we considered the name “Big Fish” and “Variant” or something like that…

WHAT DO YOU DO OUTSIDE OF ATOMIC:

There’s an outside? Mainly ski and travel.

EDUCATION:

A proud product of the Oakland Public School system.

FUN FACTS:

5-time Emmy nominee, 1-time winner. (2009 winner for Best Regularly Scheduled Weekly Sports Program). Also owned Apple, Intel and Ross Stores stock in the mid 80′s as a teenage stock trader. Sold it all for a $3000 profit. If held today, it’d be worth several million. Oh well.

PLACES YOU’VE TRAVELED:

Went to Egypt during a revolution in February of 2011. Where there’s snow to ski on, been there.

PROFESSIONAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

None that I can think of. Except that Emmy thing.

WHAT DO YOU DO HERE:

The question should be, what don’t I do. Officially I’m the Production Manager, but I do a little of everything. From producing & directing to editing and making props and doing make-up for shoots.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED AT ATOMIC:

August 1994

WHAT DO YOU DO OUTSIDE OF ATOMIC:

There’s an outside? How come no one told me there is an outside? I enjoy going to concerts and sometimes I get a little wounded. Couple of concussions, lots of bruises, but it’s always fun.
I love video games! I’m a recovering EverQuest addict and my Wii Fit age is 21. Words for Friends anyone?

EDUCATION:

I’m against it. I have my Associates in Social Sciences from the College of Alameda. I dropped out of San Francisco State University my Junior year when I couldn’t afford tuition anymore.

STRANGEST JOB:

Besides working for a guy that predicted the end of the world… I was a waitress at the lunch counter in Woolworth my junior and senior year in high school. My favorite customer, Jim came in everyday and ordered coffee with toast and ketchup. After two years of me calling him Jim he told me that his name wasn’t Jim…

FUN FACTS:

I play Alto Saxophone – In high school I earned an Academic “A” in Performing Arts – I have 4 tattoos – I get lost easy – I once chased a bear in Lake Tahoe to take it’s picture. Did you know that you aren’t supposed to do that? If it sounds dangerous, I’m down to try it.

PLACES YOU TRAVELED:

Italy, France, Austria, Switzerland, Czech Republic – China – Jordan – Egypt.. Oddly I have never been to Hawaii….

FAVORITE PROJECT:

We did a commercial for a pirate store. It’s not everyday you get to play with swords and charge someone for it.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED AT ATOMIC:

WHAT DO YOU DO OUTSIDE OF ATOMIC:

Play frisbee sports, ride bikes, cook, parent.

EDUCATION:

I entered San Francisco State University in 1988. In 1998, I finally received a BA in Broadcast Communication Arts.

STRANGEST JOB:

My jobs outside of video production have been all about animals. I worked as a dog walker, and also sold tropical fish through high school and summers during college.

FUN FACTS:

You might think that editing for a living would result in spending time following other pursuits. You would be wrong. I am a member of Scary Cow, a Bay Area-based group that makes films, and then competes for funding at screenings at the Castro Theatre. I have edited several projects that have “won” funding. Which, considering that I am a professional, would be pathetic if I did not win.

Rocco (son), Rusty (fish).

PLACES YOU’VE TRAVELED:

Canada, England, France, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand.

PROFESSIONAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

After getting cheated several times by the pack of monkeys that volunteered to judge entries, I finally won an Emmy for Best Sports Program for “49ers Total Access” in 2009. Those monkeys were 49ers fans, apparently. Or just had better taste.

Some THOUGHTS:

Our industry sits at the nexus of technology and aesthetics, or logic and art, and both sides of this equation interest me. I think advertising can be a vital art form. To be sure, it is a form that operates under constraints; first and foremost, we’ve got to sell widgets. But constraints can be liberating, freeing us from the potential paralysis of choice. And what other art form taps into our collective unconscious so effectively, capturing and framing the cultural zeitgeist? Like it or not, it’s something we interact with every day. Our mission as creators of content is to elevate it above the mundane. And it’s an exciting time for filmmaking. As technology becomes more and more accessible, the need for skilled artists remains.

HOMETOWN:

Yardley Pennsylvania… If you find it on a map you get an extra gold star

WHAT YOU DO HERE:

At Atomic I’m an editor, colorist (I have one of those extra large boxes from Crayola), 3D artist/animator, RED Tech, RED Camera Assistant, and spiritual advisor.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED AT ATOMIC:

I started working at Atomic in July of 2007

WHAT DO YOU DO OUTSIDE OF ATOMIC:

Outside of Atomic I enjoy playing hockey, golf and boxing. I also tend to find myself on the computer watching various 3D modeling tutorials. Oh, and apparently I annoy my wife by playing the occasional video game.

EDUCATION:

I graduated Cum Laude from the University of Pittsburgh in 2006 with a BA in politics and philosophy… would you like fries with that?

STRANGEST JOB:

The strangest job I ever had was; while in college, I was cast in a Main-stage showing of Bertolt Bercht’s, “Mother Courage and Her Children.” And, while my acting skills remain sub-par to this day, I was told that if I knew anything about Brechtian Theater I’d understand why I was cast in that play.

FUN FACTS:

In high school I competed in Speech & Debate tournaments, and my senior year, I placed 19th in the country in my event. I once worked as the video counselor/specialist at a summer camp in White County Georgia. Before working for Atomic, I was a utility guy for FSN Wisconsin and the Milwaukee Brewers where I spent my evenings running after cameramen while winding 300 feet of cable behind me.

CHILDREN/PETS:

I have a beautiful baby girl, Torah, two feline fur-children, Vinny and Caligula, and two feather-children, Budget and Gidget.

FAVORITE FOOD:

My favorite food has to be sushi; there is just something about the smell of raw fish.

PLACES YOU’VE TRAVELED:

I’ve traveled to Israel, England, Canada and Wisconsin.

PROFESSIONAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

Editing and Color-grading the feature film, “Red Ice,” a selection in the 2011 “Another Hole in the Head” Film Festival in San Francisco. Teaching myself the 3D modeling program, Blender.

FAVORITE PROJECT:

My favorite project has actually been modeling the new Atomic Logo in 3D (using the 2D version as my blueprint). It has been an incredible challenge with many stages of development and countless hours of work and research in order to get it to look just right. I actually began the project on my home computer as a way to continue to test my abilities in 3D modeling.

FAVORITE MOVIE OR TV SHOW:

My favorite TV show has to be the Simpsons. That show has been on the air almost as long as I can remember. Over the years, the Simpsons have not only provided me with entertainment, but also an endless list of quotations and one-liners that are applicable to almost any conversation.
